INFINITE SUPPLY
Today's Message from Chip Brogden
"O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Rom. 7:24).
Paul
shows us that having the spiritual stuff all figured out – the
doctrinal statement and the theological position and the correct
teaching – is not enough for day-to-day living and overcoming. You can
have all those things right on paper and right in your head and still be
defeated by sin. Something hinders us from making progress. It isn’t
for a lack of teaching or knowledge. It isn’t God. It is us. As the old
song goes, “It’s me, it’s me, it’s me oh Lord, standin’ in the need of
prayer!”
The problem is not so much about what we DO; the problem
is what we ARE. “I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwells no
good thing” (Rom. 7:18). It finally comes down to our own impotence:
“Who will deliver me?” And thankfully, we have the answer; and with Him,
we have the secret of living the Christian life as God intended for us
to live.
All of us (even Paul) must travel a path that takes us
from lofty spiritual and theological concepts down to our most basic
struggle with sin and the flesh. To overcome, we must move on from
“what” I believe to “Whom” I believe; from how things should be to how
things are; from the theory to the practical application; from a
doctrine to a Deliverer; from a page in a book to a Person who fills me
with His presence.
