First was Logan, followed by Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, then Wonder Woman, and now comes the incredible Spider-Man: Homecoming. 2017 has been the best year of comic book movies ever!
Spider-Man: Homecoming is part Disney Channel teenage coming of age, part Marvel super-hero film. Peter Parker, played wonderfully by Tom Holland, has all the struggles of a teenage boy (uncertainty with girls, being bullied, impatience, learning how to dance and tie a tie) while at the same time figuring out how to be a potential Avenger.
The movie’s antagonist Adrian Toomes, played by the incredible Michael Keaton, becomes The Vulture after S.H.I.E.L.D. shuts down his salvage business after the alien attack in the original Avengers film. He utilizes already-obtained alien technology to become a high-tech arms dealer. There is one scene in particular when Toomes and Parker are talking in a car. You really get the sense that Keaton is pure evil.
The movie’s best action sequence involves the Washington Monument. If you have a fear of heights, this scene will make you very uncomfortable.
You can take your entire family to this film. There are only a handful of slang words but no GDs for F-bombs. Thank you Marvel. I completely enjoyed this movie. Spider-Man is such a welcome addition to the Marvel universe. Go see it and have a great time!
The following are 15 Leadership Quotes And Lessons From Spider-Man: Homecoming:
- The More Quality Leaders You Have The Better Your Organization Is – This movie is loaded with professional artisans Robert Downey Jr., Michael Keaton, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Jon Favreau returning as Happy, and Gwyneth Paltrow also returns as Pepper Potts. I am interested in seeing where they now take the Stark-Potts relationship.
- Scarcity Births Creativity – Toomes said, “You can make some cool stuff with alien junk.”
- Leaders Provide Clear Direction To Those On Their Teams – Parker asked Stark, “So, to become an Avenger, are there like trials or an interview?” Stark replied, “You just don’t do anything I would do, and definitely don’t do anything I wouldn’t do. There’s a little grey area in there and that’s where you operate.
- It Takes Time To Be An Expert At Your Craft – Spider-Man was quite uncoordinated throughout the movie. He was constantly crashing into cars, pools and buildings as he learns how to use his new suit. Also, he is hilariously bad at interrogating people.
- All Leaders Need A Coach – Everyone gets better with a coach. Stark served as coach and guide to Parker throughout the movie. He also provided him with the resources/suit he needed to be successful.
- All Young Leaders Need A Mentor – Young leaders can often confuse exposure with experience. A mentor helps them navigate unforeseen challenges and difficulties if they are willing to listen. Once again, this is what Stark did for Parker.
- Smart Leaders Must Know Their Limitations – Parker said, “I’m sick of Mr. Stark treating me like a kid.” To which his best friend Ned noted, “But you are a kid.” Parker replied, “Yeah. A kid who can stop a bus with his bare hands.”
- There Are Perks To Being A Leader – Ned tells a nervous Parker, “You’re an Avenger. If anyone has a chance with senior girls, it’s you.”
- Great Leaders Are Humble Leaders. Rather Than Seeking Out A Platform, They Allow The Platform To Find Them – Ned asks Parker, “What is it like being famous when no one knows it’s you.”
- To Be In Authority You Must First Learn To Be Under Authority – Captain America said in a hilarious public service announcement, “The only way to really be cool is to follow the rules.”
- Give Young Leaders Your Most Valuable Commodity, Time – During one scene Parker thought he was speaking with an Iron Man drone and said, “What does it matter? You’re not even here.” Then the suit opened up and out walked Tony Stark.
- The People Are A Picture Of The Leader – Peter said, “I wanted to be like you.” Stark replied, “I wanted you to be better.”
- There Is A BIG Difference Between Who You Are And What You Do – Parker acknowledged, “I’m nothing without the suit!” To which Stark advised, “If you’re nothing without the suit, then you shouldn’t have it.”
- Successful Leaders Surround Themselves With A Team To Help Them Carry The Load – Aunt May told Peter, “You need to stop carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders.”
- Always Leave People Wanting More – In true Marvel fashion, there was an interesting post-credits scene involving Toomes in prison. Let me just say, get ready for The Sinister Six!
