This week we have a 10:2b story for you, Richard and Carolyn Hyde of
Israel. In Israel, the Hydes were seeing churches from the United
States, Ethiopia, Russia, all imported versions of churches that had
begun somewhere else. What they didn't see was an indigenous church...a
church led by Israelis, one that made sense for Israelis. All of these
churches followed the general Western church model, people sitting
silently in rows listening to a preacher. According to Richard and
Carolyn this isn't a good fit for Israel, because apparently Jews like
to talk!
This all means that the LK10 rhythms have been working great for the
Hydes (and all the folks they've been introducing to LK10), because
everyone gets to talk in LK10. Instead of sitting in rows, quietly
facing the front, and passively receiving from the pulpit, they are
flourishing in LK10's more familial ways of being church.
But what was especially helpful for me is Carolyn's remarks at
4:35.
She grew up in a family where "everybody talked but nobody listened.
That's what I like about LK10, is that everybody's still talking, but
this time everybody's listening." I don't know about you, but listening
deeply to others isn't something I'm that good at. I'm good at thinking
about the thing I want to say next. I'm good at thinking about what I
wish I had said to that driver who cut me off in traffic earlier. I'm
good at thinking about what I'm going to have for my next meal. But
listening to others? It's something that takes practice for me, and it's
partly because I grew up in a family like Carolyn's.
It's so helpful to remember that I'm not the only person who grew up in a
family like that. But it's also helpful to remember that in LK10, we're
all learning to listen. We're co-learners here, even on some of the
most basic, simple things. Things like listening to each other.
Listening to ourselves, to our own hearts. Listening to Jesus. I'm happy
to be family with you all, learning to listen together.
