Viola: Free Stuff * Black Friday Starts Now!

My Response to John MacArthur * Free Stuff * Black Friday Discount NOW
November 24, 2013

Hi Friends. Frank Viola here.

I'm excited to share four awesome things with you!

1. Free Stuff

If you like free content, you'll love this.

My blog now has over 700 free articles. I'm still blogging 3x a week. My recent article, "Scratch a Christian & You'll Find Out What They're Made Of" is among my most popular.

Also, there are now 84 episodes on my podcast, all of which are free also. The last episode caused quite a stir. A good one. It's called "Answers to Hot-Boiling Questions."

I'll share the links for the free blog articles and the free podcast in a minute.

2. Black Friday begins now and will go until Cyber Monday.

In keeping with the season, we are offering my new Online Discipleship Course - How to Live by the Indwelling Life of Christ - at a big discount from now until Cyber Monday, Dec. 2nd.

Important: This course will be closed on December 31st. And it will not reopen until March 2014.

So if you were planning on getting the course, now is the time while it's on discount. Also, if you have ANY questions about the course or you want testimonials from recent members, let me know.

Remember: The discount ends Monday, Dec. 2nd.

3. My 75-page critique of John MacArthur's book -- Strange Fire -- is now available in Mobi format (Kindle), ePub format (Nook), and PDF format (any computer).

This eBook is not just a critique. It's a detailed discussion on the gifts, power, and operation of the Holy Spirit in our time. Some of the historical research contained in this book is remarkable and it blew me away.

4. Last but not least, next week, I will be sending you one last update for the year. And it will contain two BIG things.

One of them has to do with Watchman Nee's work that is exclusive to our ministry and it will be a HUGE blessing to you. Especially for this holiday season.

Talk to you again next week.

Warmly,

fv

LK10 Regional Conferences

Dear LK10 Family,

"It was the most powerful meeting that has ever taken place in our home."

That's what Cathy Mellon said about the one day Central Texas LK10 Conference in that took place in her home in October. Jim and Cathy Mellon are pioneers in the house church movement.  They have had hundreds of meetings in their home in Killeen, TX over the last 21 years.  So, when Cathy made the statement above, it carries real weight!  ln the video below, you will hear several of the participants from that Conference describe what they did and the powerful ways God worked.  (Click on the link, not the photo)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q3Q-Dm8hKc

Our sense is that these regional conferences are a new tool that the Lord is giving to the LK10 Community.  They work well in tandem with the Church 101 Courses.  That is, a number of people in a particular region go through Church 101 and begin practicing the two foundational rhythms of attention.  Then, they attend one of these conferences where the rhythms are deepened and relational bonds are formed.  In this way, we believe regional networks of house church leaders will develop naturally.

LK10 Regional Conferences in the works...

*Bay Area in California.  March 1, 2014.  Planning Team:  John Parker, Mike Torrell, Mina Millen, Jim Edmunds, Sean Hyatt, John White.

*Central Texas.  January.  Specific date TBA

*Denver.  TBA

Let us know if you are interested in a Regional LK10 Conference in your area.

Apart From the Cross

Apart From the Cross

“I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”
1 CORINTHIANS 2:2

We can quote these teachings of Jesus, seek to imitate Him as our Example, strive to walk the narrow Way, and even accomplish many good deeds in His Name. But apart from the Cross these activities are wood, hay and stubble.
In calling us to come back to the Cross, God is asking us to lay down our lives and embrace the Wisdom of death, burial, resurrection, and ascension in order to live as sons and daughters within the Kingdom of God. Apart from the Cross we can neither enter the Kingdom nor live in the Spirit, no matter how great the desire. For apart from the Cross, we do not know what it is to turn the other cheek, to go the extra mile, to love our enemies, to pray for those who persecute us. Apart from the Cross, we do not know what it is to submit to the will of God, accept suffering, and cast ourselves upon Him. Apart from the Cross, we do not know what Resurrection is.

A Religion of Fear

A Religion of Fear

by Chip Brogden

Q: “At times waves of fear wash over me… if I am still in the system, will I miss the Rapture? I am slowly going out of the system and I am praying that the system is taken out of me. I love Jesus with all my heart and only want to follow what He asks me to do.”
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all follow the Lord and let Him lead us, without being hindered, or distracted, or held back, or intimidated, or fearful, because of something that the Church taught us, or something the preacher said?
So here’s the fear in the question: will I miss the Rapture? That’s another example of fear. Instead of love and hope and joyful expectation for the return of Christ, Religion has produced this fear in you. It’s like a black cloud hanging over your head, turning what should be a joyful thing into a fearful thing. I don’t blame you, I blame the religious system. Fear is the fruit of that religious system...

His Fullness

His Fullness

“Till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.”
EPHESIANS 4:13

It is the FULLNESS of Christ that we are after, the revelation of Christ as He IN FACT IS. For too many Christians the Lord Jesus is “merely” their Savior. Thank God He is our Savior, but there is a depth and a richness bound up into the personage of Christ that goes far, far beyond “mere” salvation. Salvation is the narrow gate – coming into the fullness of Christ is the narrow path. The gate is only the entrance to something larger.

Grace is a Man

Grace is a Man

“All of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’”
1 PETER 5:5

The single requirement for grace is humility. But what is grace? Grace is more than just a theological term used to describe how we are saved. Grace is the power of God at work in my life to do what cannot be done in my own strength. Grace is energizing and proactive. When I have reached the end of myself then Grace Himself takes over and does what I am unable to do. In the first place, what I cannot do is save myself, and so I trust in the Grace of God, Jesus Christ, to save me.
But Grace will not only bring me through the Gate; He will bring me down the Path. Grace does not just get me started in the right direction, but goes along with me every step of the way. For Grace is a Man!

Times and Seasons

Times and Seasons

“It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority.
Acts 1:7 ESV

They had asked, “Lord, will You at this time restore the Kingdom to Israel?” The response from Jesus is anticlimactic to the impatient. The King will not be forced, or rushed, or pushed into action. Jesus said, “It is not for you to know the times and the seasons.”
The Kingdom of God is progressive – growing up from a single seed into an abundant tree with many branches and much fruit. Those seedlings were just freshly planted in eleven men and they would not come to maturity all at once but over the course of many seasons of increase and decrease. We cannot speculate as to when He will return in the power and glory of His Kingdom. We must “watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.”

Better Than "Willpower"

Better Than "Willpower"

“I die daily.”
1 CORINTHIANS 15:31

Paul might have buckled under the pressure. He certainly grew weary. He certainly was misunderstood, rejected, and persecuted. He suffered so much. What kept him going? Verse 29 of Colossians 1 says, “To this end I labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily.” He labors, and he strives. That’s the way Paul was. Laboring and striving, even when he was laboring and striving for the wrong things, he was absolutely dedicated to the mission. But there is something more extraordinary at work in Paul, something more than sheer willpower or determination.
I tell you willpower will only take you so far. Willpower is overrated. We need something else, something supernatural, something that does not rely upon my limited willpower. What was it? “I strive according to HIS WORKING which works in me mightily.” It was not the strength of Paul, but the strength of Christ in Paul, and through this Christ, Paul said, “I can do all things” (Philippians 4:13). All things!

I've Been Ruined #6

Part 2 of this series details how Satan gets us to believe lies about ourselves, our purpose, our life, how his lies become truth to us, and then how to un-believe those lies. This includes how the enemy gets us to do things we don't want to do, the process of agreement with the old thoughts or with God's thoughts, the comfort zone known within those old thoughts and risk of thinking new thoughts, and how to bring thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ. It is about the time involved in the process of becoming transformed by renewing the mind, and how to walk it out in victory! (2 cd/MP3, $12/set or MP3 $10)

There are new recordings online from Johns conference this fall. He teaches on ways God speaks to us, as well as a Q & A time about house church.

Hi all,
"We love you Americans, we really do. But you're all a bunch of liars!"

I was shocked to hear this from the wife of one of the international Bible school students, her husband nervously standing by with a roll of his eyes that said 'Oh please be quite dear let's go' in his eyes, but her tone wasn't condemning, more like frustrated. She had baited me so I bit: "What do you mean?"

Softly now, to make her point: "We admire the American way of life, your freedoms, you know - conquer the west, follow your dreams, be anything you want to be - we can't do that in my country. But you are all liars. You say 'I'll call you next week' or 'Let's get together for lunch' or 'I'll call you', but you never do!"

Looking for the right thing, but...
She was looking for genuine relationships in church and had no idea that just a little while later the Director of Music for a mega-church would sit in my office and express the same desire using different words; "I'm surrounded by people here at church, but I'm all alone. I don't have any real friends and no one really knows my wife and I. What do I do? Is there anyone real out there, without an agenda for using me or manipulating me? Are there any genuine friends in church?"

Both these couples, who became good friends of ours I might add, were searching for something the structure of the way church has been done the last 1700 years isn't designed to do: Promote relationships.

Why the IC (Institutional Church) is the way it is
Jethro watched his son-in-law Moses, settle disputes and answer questions from the people to the point of exhaustion. He told him in so many words that he needed to create the infrastructure for the Federal Government of Israel - the newest nation on the planet, born a few days earlier when they had walked across the temporarily dried up Red Sea.

"Set up captains over 1,000's, and 100's, and 50's, and 10's, and let them handle the small stuff so you only have to deal with the upper leaders and problems too big for the lower captains."  (Exodus 18:17-26)

Moses did that, and the Federal Government of Israel was born. In that same time frame the priesthood for temple government would be established on the same principle, with a High Priest who presided over lesser ranks of priests, down to still lower ranked priests and eventually down to boys in training to be priests. (Samuel, for example)

The church adopts Moses' Federal Government structure
Flash forward to about 300 years after Pentecost - It is the year 313 AD, and Emperor Constantine legalizes Christianity, calling believers out of their home based meetings and into former pagan temples and their pews, establishing the system of Moses for the new auditorium style meetings of 'church'. The body stopped being the church and started going to church. By necessity one gift became elevated, the pastor/priest, and 'captains' of lesser rank were established over the people.

Thus the 5-fold, deacons (servers), helps, gifts of the Spirit, motivation gifts like exhorting and giving and organizing and all the other graces, were pulled out of the context of scripture which was the home, and made it fit into the auditorium - and it has been that way for 1700 years. That's why there are so many books on this program or that, because God designed home based meetings but man lifted it out of the home and put it in an auditorium. Man has been trying to fit that square peg in the round hole ever since.

What changed at Pentecost, and how church was for 300 years
In Exodus 19 God came out of eternity and down to the mountain to talk to Moses, then moved into the newly constructed Ark of the Covenant, residing between the cherubs to commune with Moses there. Some 400 years later David still knew Him as 'the God who lives between the cherubs'. He then moved from the tent of David into Solomon's temple with such glory the priests lost their strength as the bright cloud of His presence filled the temple. (Exodus 25:21-22, 33:1-11, II Samuel 6:2, II Chronicles 5:7-14; 7:1-3)

From that point on God lived in the Holy of Holies in the temple in Jerusalem - that's all Israel and the world knew for 1,000 years. That is 1,000 years of knowing if you wanted to meet with God, you had to go to the temple in Jerusalem, and you couldn't meet Him directly, it had to be through one of His priests, the chosen few who were in ministry to God. The rest had 'secular' jobs.

That all changed on Pentecost, for that same God who came out of eternity to meet Moses on the mountain, Who came off the mountain to live in the tabernacle's Holy of Holies, who still lived between the cherubs 400 years later in David's time, who moved with glory and fire into Solomon's temple when they brought the Ark of the Covenant and His manifest presence into that building - on Pentecost He moved into human beings! Human beings became living temples of God!

Paul's revelation
Paul 'got it' that we are now the temples of God and wrote continually about the realities of that fact, but nowhere is he more to the point that Colossians 1:25-27:

"...God is revealing the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is; Christ in you! - the hope of glory."

Christ in us! When people became living temples of God, it made the temple building irrelevant, not needed, an archaic expression of a previous time. God had revealed a mystery - He couldn't move into people who were sinners, so He had to recreate their spirit by His Spirit, then He could move inside them and they could be walking, talking, portable temples for Him, taking Him and the knowledge of Him and His ways over the face and breadth of the earth!

The consequences of Christ in you
This is a major consequence of Christ in you: You can stop doing things to impress or move Him; you can now start walking with Him.

Christ in you means no formulas are needed. He lives in you so you don't need to shout - He is not hard of hearing. You don't need to pray for an open heaven, Christ is in you. You don't need to put a specially anointed square of cloth under your pillow for 7 nights straight and then send it and your best offering to brother so and so he can pray for you.

You don't need to drop $100 on the platform of x speaker to get God to answer your prayer or give you that breakthrough you need. You don't need to be afraid of the devil - not only is Christ in you, you've received both the authority to use His name and also the power of the Spirit as well - just command demons to flee, and they do.

It means there are no special days of the week to worship on, for Christ is in us 24/7, so every day is worship day. It means I can give freely to those in need, to leaders, to help others according to how Christ in me and my heart are directed.

It means there is no such thing as sacred and secular because Christ in me makes all I do and all I am, sacred. From my job to my home to my computer - I take Christ with me to work, to play, 24 hours a day, so all is sacred. We all have sacred jobs. We are all in ministry because Christ is in us.

The other side of the coin
It also means I am personally and instantly accountable to Him who resides in me. It means I have part of His personality in me, and every other brother and sister in the Lord have part of His personality in them, therefore being in relationship with other living temples becomes my #1 priority in how I worship. I am so eager to see what He is doing in others, to see Him in them, I love to be around them in real life, through the ups and downs, the defeats and
victories.

It means we are all equal, the apostle and giver of a cup of water to a child, for we are all saved by the same blood - the only difference is our function in life and the body of Christ. Christ in me means I am free to be myself as I continually grow in Him, taking every challenge in life and relationship to ask, 'How can I grow more in Him through this?'

It means - I can swim in the open ocean, no more tied down to an aquarium, but schooled together with other 'fish' of the same kind, for Paul said there is neither Jew nor Greek, bond nor free, we are all one in Christ.

Righteousness comes through faith in Christ, but it is unproven - anyone can say they are a Christian. God has designed that the proof of our righteousness be manifest in relationships, and those start in the home just like it did with Adam, Eve, and the Lord in the garden - where 2 or more are gathered, He is in their midst - why? Because He lives in them both!

And that raises the question for next week in a new series...until then!

    Blessings,
        John Fenn

When Men Fail

When Men Fail

“The anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you.”
1 JOHN 2:27

It was God who gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers to His Ekklesia, to encourage, edify, and establish all of us deeper into Christ. Can the Holy Spirit in John contradict the Holy Spirit in Paul? By no means.
What then? John was the sole survivor of the first twelve apostles, and now he is very old. Naturally he is concerned with the welfare of the Ekklesia after his death. So God comforts John, and then John comforts us, with this truth: even if we do not have access to the apostle, or prophet, or evangelist, or pastor and teacher, we are still instructed inwardly. The Ekklesia that Jesus is building is not dependent upon the great men or women of God. We are grateful to the ministry gifts when we have them, but we are not dependent upon them for our Life. The Life is greater than the ministers through which it may be ministered.

Power Through Weakness

Power Through Weakness

“God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.”
1 CORINTHIANS 1:27 ESV

The Wisdom of God teaches us differently. This Wisdom tells us that the weak things are chosen to overcome the strong things, and power works concurrently with weakness.
God desires to give you power, but that power only comes through weakness. Any power not obtained through weakness is illegitimate, no matter how spiritual it appears. The only legitimate power is granted to those who have been made weak. Power is birthed in weakness. Many exude a certain “power,” but there is not the corresponding weakness. Hence, the power only gives them an occasion for boasting. To remedy this, God has ordained that all who would have His power must first be weakened and made empty – we refer to this as being “broken.” The purpose of weakness and suffering is to open the way for His Power. The instrument God uses to weaken us is the Cross. Therefore, the Cross is power through weakness.

GOD'S APPROVED CHURCH MODEL

God’s Approved Church Model

church modelI don’t think God cares too much which church model we use, house church, mega church, liturgical church, or free-for-all charismatic church.
I don’t think God cares too much which church model we use, house church, mega church, liturgical church, or free-for-all charismatic church.
God’s main concerns are justice, compassion, grace, mercy, generosity, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. If you are engaged in these things, then may God bless you in whatever church model you choose.
If you are not doing these things, God cannot be pleased, no matter how large and famous (or small and intimate) your church model is.
What do you think? Agree? Disagree? Let me know!

WHAT IF...

What if…

This is from a 2008 post by Perry Noble. I thought it was good then, and it’s still good today.
what if questions about church
I had some “what if” thoughts the other day that I wanted to share…
  • WHAT IF the church really believed that Jesus was as powerful as Scripture says that He is?
  • WHAT IF we were not afraid to BEG GOD for ridiculous things, knowing that He is able?
  • WHAT IF we REALLY believed that Acts 2:41-47 was actually the starting point of all that God wants to do through the church and NOT the watermark?
  • WHAT IF we really believed that a life dedicated to Christ means that we are completely His…not just on Sunday?
  • WHAT IF every church became a cheerleader of other churches and not critics?
  • WHAT IF we really believed the church existed to CHANGE the world and not just to “meet my needs!”
  • WHAT IF we really believe that teenagers and children are worth the investment and poured resources into them instead of making them sell doughnuts in front of department stores?
  • WHAT IF we really believed God’s Kingdom should grow through the church instead of being stagnant?
  • WHAT IF we were willing to lay aside our personal preferences for the sake of reaching those who are far from God?
  • WHAT IF we refused to participate in slandering and tearing down another person?
  • WHAT IF we sought to embrace God’s plan for our lives (and churches) instead of trying to get Him to bless ours?
Those are just some of the things I’ve been wondering

Stop Attending Church to Start Spiritual Conversations

Stop Attending Church to Start Spiritual Conversations

Stop Attending ChurchNo, I’m not telling you to stop attending church.
You must do what you believe God wants you to do.

If you Stop Attending Church

But if you stop attending church so that you can be the church, it may be the best thing that ever happens to you in your life with Jesus and your evangelistic endeavors.
When I stopped attending church, the number of spiritual conversations I had with people skyrocketed.
When I stopped attending church, the number of spiritual conversations I had with people skyrocketed.
Previously, when I was a pastor and a regular church attender, I rarely had spiritual conversations with people who were not already in a church. But after I stopped attending church, and started trying to follow Jesus into the world, the number of conversations I had with people who don’t go to church became a nearly daily occurrence. Now, as I go about my day, run errands, and so on, I have been shocked at how Jesus just seems to insert himself into conversations.
Previously, I used to try to figure out how to “change the subject” from weather and politics to the Bible and Jesus. It was always awkward and unnatural. Now, I sometimes find myself talking about following Jesus outside of “the church” to someone, and I think to myself, “How in the world did we end up here?”
I don’t really know how to explain it.
Yes, I am praying for opportunities to talk with people, and our girls are real outspoken about Jesus, and my wife and I are always carrying around Christian books, so maybe those spark the conversations. But we have always done these things. What changed?
Only one thing. I stopped “going to church” so I could be the church. It’s not always an either-or, but it’s what we did.

People Want to Know why You Stopped Attending Church

When people find out I’m trying to follow Jesus but I don’t “attend church” they are intrigued. They often want to find out more, and the conversation turns to subjects of following Jesus, questions about God, and other spiritual matters.
I make it a point to say that I have not stopped attending church because I hate the church or am running from God. No, I am more involved now with church than ever before.
I have not stopped attending church because I hate the church or am running from God. No, I am more involved now with church than ever before.
I am trying to follow Jesus in ways that show love to others than ever before. The time and energy I used to devote to attending church I now seek to use in being the church among others. This sort of conversation usually leads to another conversation, and another, until eventually, we have a relationship, and we hang out, eat lunch together, help each other with work around the yard or house, and so on.
So for me, stopping attending church seems to be a good “conversation starter” with lots of other people who do not go to church.
Have you had experiences like this, where God seems to work in and through your life once you have started “being the church” rather than just “attending church”?
(Note: In the past few years, I have met a few people who were “sent out” by their church as missionaries with this sort of task. They work secular jobs, and just meet regularly with people for discussions. They made it clear to their church that they will not be attending church and will not be trying to convince the people they meet with to attend church. The sending church agrees to this, and supports them in prayer… and sometimes financially. That is awesome!)

Accomplished Through the Cross

Accomplished Through the Cross

“We were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
ROMANS 6:4

The Cross is the means by which God reduces us to Christ, that we may be raised to new Life. What cannot be accomplished in a lifetime of self-effort is easily accomplished in God through the Cross.
We may take many shortcuts along the way and attempt to escape the inevitable, but the day we cease striving and meekly accept the Cross we find everything is done for us.

Family, Fellowship and Leadership

Family, Fellowship and Leadership

by Chip Brogden

Q: “I’m curious of your view on this: Do you believe in meetings with leadership that has been recognized by the others (others have seen the gifting of the Spirit in lives and recognized them as such, not a seminary degree but the Life of Christ coming from them)? I ask because it seems like you are telling people to go and hear God without really having any form of leadership (again servants to help equip them for their life ministry). I don’t ever see Paul preaching and then sending them out to be alone and just hear God, he set up fellowships where elders were established... "
So the question concerns spiritual leadership, and of course I’m going to take this lengthy question and organize my answer as if I were doing a teaching on the subject, which means boiling it down to answering these basic questions: what is spiritual leadership, is it needed today, and if so, how does it function, or, how is it supposed to function – because we all know that the spiritual intent of something often breaks down once we try to implement it in real life...

His Word is Truth

His Word is Truth

“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.”
JOHN 17:17

I am frequently asked how do we partake of this fullness? How do we walk in it? What practical application exists for living according to this Truth? We see what God says, but we also see our situation. We see Jesus, but we also see ourselves. God says we are complete in Him, but we say we are incomplete. God says we are blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ, but we say we still need this or that. What is the problem here? Is it not a glaring discrepancy between what God says and what we say? Whose word is more reliable?

The Key to All Revelation

The Key to All Revelation

“In [Christ] are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
COLOSSIANS 2:3

It is not that God desires to give us revelation into the many things, but for us to have the Revelation of Jesus Christ. By apprehending Him we will subsequently gain insight in those “things.”
To seek revelation into the “things” apart from the Revelation of Christ fails to give Christ the preeminence. We dare not circumvent the knowledge of Him in the pursuit of “things,” even spiritual things, for they are all summed up into Him.

A House Church Argument

A House Church Argument

house churchI am not against “House churches.” I love house churches, and I love house church people.
But I do get nervous when house church proponents (HCP) start to condemn all other forms of church. It sounds ominously familiar…
I do get nervous when house church proponents (HCP) start to condemn all other forms of church. It sounds ominously familiar…
To see what I mean, listen in as I discuss house with with a house church proponent:
HCP: The Book of Acts describes house churches. So house churches are the only biblical way of doing church.
Me: But this is 2013. Things have changed. Don’t you think Jesus might want His church to have changed too?
HCP: No! God wrote down in the Bible the way God wanted church done. Any other way is unbiblical and is doing whatever is right in your own eyes.
Me: But even you don’t do  church exactly like they did it in Acts. You’ve made some modifications for our time and culture. So doesn’t this mean that you are unbiblical?
HCP: No. The changes we made are still consistent with what the Spirit was doing in Acts. We have maintained the pattern found in the Bible.
Me: Who gets to decide which changes are allowable and which ones are not?
HCP: We studied the Scripture, prayed, sought the leading of the Spirit, and made these adjustments.
Me: Yes, but other believers have done the same thing, and made a few adjustments that you did not make, and now you are condemning them for their changes. Why do you want to say that your way is the one right way, and theirs is wrong?
HCP: They adopted their ways from pagan practices, like buildings, priests, choirs, sermons, and salaries.
Me: So anything that pagans do is wrong for churches to do also?
HCP: Yes, that’s right.
Me: Well, you know there are lots of pagan religions around the world and throughout time that look remarkably similar to a house church. They meet in homes, teach each other the ideas of their faith, share some food, and do what they can to encourage each other to follow their religion. Often they pray to their gods and sing some songs too.
HCP: What religions are those?

Me: Almost all religious groups, to tell you the truth. They only move into temples and other buildings once they reach a certain size. But some groups try to remain in homes, such as Bahai, Santeria, Voodoo, and many forms of Buddhism and Hinduism.
HCP: Well, just because these groups are similar to House Churches doesn’t mean that House Churches are following their practices.
Me: I agree. And the same argument applies to churches with buildings, pastors, choirs, sermons, and salaries.
HCP: I don’t know about that.
Me: Even if history shows (which is does) that the church borrowed these things from pagan cults, history also shows that the early church borrowed their practices from Jewish and Greco-Roman patterns. The early believers didn’t just invent this house church pattern out of thin air. The followed some of the cultural patterns that were around them at the time.
Furthermore, just because something used to be “pagan” does not make it wrong.  You and I used to be pagan, but God has washed us, redeemed us, and raised us up in Christ to live in a new way. If God can do this for people, why can’t He do it for customs and cultural patterns also?
—–
The conversation continues like this for quite some time. As we debate, I keep thinking I’ve heard all these arguments before.
Then it dawns on me.
The arguments are not identical, but the whole “This is the right way to do church and everybody else is wrong” idea is taken right out of the mega church model handbook: “This is the right way to do things, and if you want to reach our culture for Christ, you must follow this pattern. Otherwise, God can’t use you.”
As it turns out, house churches and mega churches have something in common after all…
house churches and mega churches have something in common after all…
I am not trying to criticize house churches (or mega churches). Instead, I am hoping that all of us who seek to follow Jesus, can simply follow Him in the way that helps us live out the Gospel in our lives to the fullest extent possible, and extend grace to those who follow Jesus differently. People who attend a mega church can bless people who attend a house church, and vise versa. And people who don’t attend any church at all, but simply  try to follow Jesus relationally, can bless both groups as well and be blessed in return.
And if you want some more arguments for and against the house church, here is funny chart I found: Enjoy!
house church is cool. House church is lame.

“When it pleased God… to reveal His Son in me…I did not immediately confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me.”
GALATIANS 1:15-17

Paul did not seek credentials, ordination, or affiliation with a human organization. He did not wait for anyone to confirm the call on his life. He did not seek for hands to be laid on him. Preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ was renegade enough, but to preach the gospel to the Gentiles was a departure from the norm for the Christians at that time. It would later prove to be quite controversial and divisive. Prudence would dictate that it would be better to check with the other apostles and get their opinion and feedback before striking out in a new direction. Yet, Paul says once he obtained revelation he had no need to confer with flesh and blood.
Why? Because he was a maverick, an independent spirit, a rebel? No, it is only because the Revelation of Jesus is sufficient guidance. Flesh and blood cannot add to or take away from the Revelation.

Does God Still Speak?

Dear LK10 Family,

central and essential LK10 value is that God does still speak in a personal and intimate way today.  This is so important that we devoted a whole lesson (Lesson Three) in our Church 101 Course to this understanding (and the practice of listening to Him).  Recently, we discovered that one of the video links in Lesson Three no longer worked.  Specifically, it was the link to John Eldredge teaching on this subject.  When we explored further, we found that John's website had actually replaced the one video with four short videos (5-7 minutes each) on the subject.  Apparently, John feels this is important too!

Soon we will update the lessons in our Church 101 e-Workbook.  (FYI...  We are aware of at least 19 groups that have gone through Church 101 this fall!)  In the meantime, I want to encourage you to take time this week to watch these four short videos (even if you have seen them before!).  This topic of God speaking today is really a "great divide" within Christianity and it's vital that we have a clear understanding in this area.  I believe John is one of the best teachers on this subject.

All four of these short videos are found here:  http://www.ransomedheart.com/walking-god-extra-content  (The photos below are just to remind you that there are four videos to watch.)

Video 1.  Does God still speak?  "By nature, God is a communicator.  And, we are made in His image...  The Bible is full of examples of what it looks like to walk with God."

Video 2.  Learning to hear His voice.  "Everything in life requires growing in it.  Learning how to do it. And, this is true for learning to hear God... Start with small questions."

Video Three.  How to deal with the Enemy.  "The Age of Enlightenment caused many Christians to dismiss spiritual attack from the Christian life... Sometimes its the Enemy who keeps us from hearing God."

Video Four.  Pray like Elijah.  "James says Elijah was a man with a nature like ours... He had to pray seven times to see an answer. How encouraging it is to know this!"

John Eldredge goes into greater detail about hearing God in his book "Walking with God" which we recommend.

*How to start a house church?   Dennis Brown will be initiating a Google Hangout to explore this topic.  If you are interested, contact Dennis right away at dennisaverybrown@gmail.com   Also, see his post in the LK10 Forum, here:  http://www.lk10.com/community/community-discussion/?cid=24&show=1348

LK10: More on leading groups (house churches)

Dear LK10 Family,

Last week, I shared with you a video of a Google Hangout that begins to explore the simple but powerful practice of discipling a group in contrast to only discipling individuals in a group.  (Sometimes we refer to this as "facilitating a group".)  Why is this a key LK10 Value?  Because it is an excellent tool for fulfilling the vision God has given us which is developing "vibrant families of Jesus"

Here are some of the comments from those in the LK10 Community who watched the video...

Great hangout. Lots of good information, lots of good modeling.   -Dennis Brown (Georgia)

This was fantastic! love how it was a bit messy and very real! The way you handled the late comers and their questions was fantastic and enlightening !!!  I can see such potential in using these hangouts for training.           -Maree Watson (Australia)

Yes!  Great video. Very helpful.  We were doing a lot of nodding (not off!) and hmmm-mming.
                     Nancy and Walter Short (Colorado)

The best part of the video for me was understanding that the group is an entity - and that it will grow in health if that makes sense. I haven't done a closing round before, only a sashet and listening round so will try that tomorrow.                                        Sharon Hutchinson (Australia)

Very helpful information. I was especially interested with the concept of looking at it through the eyes of a parent. That really helped in putting everything into an environment we can all relate to. I look forward to more teaching on this topic. Is that Dick Wulf video available to everyone?(JW:  Actually it's just audio, not video.  See below on how to get it.)    Jim Edmunds (California)

Want to learn more about facilitating groups (house churches)?  Here are some next steps...

1.  Watch the video of our Hangout.  This is the video I referenced above.  If you haven't already, watch the video of this Google Hangout.  Here's the link again:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSS7uwsx1_U

2.  Listen to Dick Wulf's teaching on facilitating a group.   In the video mentioned above, I mention an audio teaching by Dick Wulf (from whom I've learned facilitating).  You should be able to download this file and listen to it from this link:  https://www.dropbox.com/s/chsj60xjtzoi923/Dick_Wulf_-_Fascilitating_Small_Groups.mp3

3.  Watch this interview.  Here's a short interview I did with Dick a couple of weeks ago.  Click on the link, not the photo.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nPNCoORX_Q&feature=youtu.be   (Note:  I know there is a lot of noise in the background.  But, this illustrates another LK10 Value:  real life storytelling.  While professional videos are great, we also want to "capture" stories in the midst of every day life.)

4.  A message from Dick Wulf to the LK10 Community.  Another LK10 Value is found in 1 Cor. 9:11.  "If we have invested in you spiritually, it is appropriate for you to invest in us financially."  When I asked Dick how we could contribute to his ministry, he wrote this special note to the LK10 Community about how we could pray for his ministry.  In addition to prayer, if Dick's teaching has been valuable to you, ask the Lord if you are to make some financial investment also.  So, read the note Dick has written and go to the bottom of the page to see how to contribute financially:  http://www.lambsbride.org/lk10.html

5.  Special Hangout on facilitating.  I'm planning on scheduling a special Google Hangout in the next couple of weeks for those who want to explore this topic further.  This would be for whoever has watched the video of the Google Hangout referenced above and who have listened to Dick's audio teaching.  Let me know if you are interested.
