Mentoring
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. ~ II Corinthians 1:3, 4READING: John 1:35-42
Some years ago I took a life-changing trip to Africa. My favorite aspect of the adventure was befriending nine top national leaders of church planting movements in South Africa, Malawi, Kenya, Uganda and Ghana. Usually, when I met with these leaders they brought along their protégés. Top leaders mentor their protégés.
At DCPI we believe that every church planter should have a mentor. Our definition of a mentor is ‘someone who has been where you want to go and will help you get there.’ All of us need mentors. I have a mentor. I meet with him once a month and he helps me chart the course for DCPI.
You may need a mentor right now in your church planting mission. You may need a wise and compassionate leader who will listen to you and pray for you, an experienced leader who can help you avoid the landmines of church planting.
How do you find a mentor? Pray and ask God to bring you one. Look for a mentor in your relationships, your denomination or your geographical region. If you can’t find a mentor close at hand, recruit a phone mentor. Be proactive. Ask the right leader to invest two hours in you each month.
Is God calling you to be a mentor? You are an equipper at heart. You know church planters are in trouble and under attack from the Enemy. You want to help other leaders and watch them grow. Through mentoring, you can increase your impact upon God’s Kingdom by developing leaders for new churches.
Father, Raise up godly mentors among us. Amen.
